Fane Valley Feeds Mill, Omagh

This project has set a new European standard – Opened in 2010, the new mill is one of the most advanced plants of its kind in Europe, delivering significant efficiencies in terms of energy demand and environmental impact. The mill incorporates the best available technology in feed milling.

The new plant is multi species in nature and has an annual compounding capacity of 300,000 tonnes. This represents a significant element of the two million tonnes of animal feed manufactured in Northern Ireland each year.

Constructed in a live operational environment within an Industrial Estate, existing businesses and employees went about their normal day-to-day activities during the construction of the new mill. This presented many challenges, particularly in terms of H&S, traffic management, deliveries and minimising inconvenience, whilst at the same time delivering a very complex building on time, within budget and with zero defect.

Due to the nature of this facility, there was an array of specialists involved in its design and construction. The success of the project was due in large part to the teams approach to collaborative working and supply chain integration. Certain parts of the building had to be completed on a phased basis to facilitate the installation of specific items of equipment, and this required extensive planning.

Meticulous programming was required, particularly for the testing and commissioning of the plant installations and equipment.
