Antrim Health Centre

This project for the Northern Health and Social Care Trust  (NHSCT)  was a complex phased refurbishment of over 100 rooms in a live operational Health Centre containing 5 GP practices.

Asbestos was removed at the start of the job by a licensed subcontractor. The HSE was advised of the works to remove the Asbestos insulation board above doors with the requisite 14 day notification period.

The first phase consisted of refurbishment of the decant accommodation, each successive phase involved the refurbishment of 4 to 5 rooms at a time.

Work included demolition and alterations, reconfiguration of the centre and the creation of new treatment rooms and new toilets. New floor and ceiling finishes were provided and the centre was fully redecorated. The seats in the waiting area were reupholstered.

New clinical hand wash basins were provided to all clinical areas. New wall mounted clinical examination lights were provided. Full height acoustic partitions were used to deal with privacy issues.

A new liquid DPC was installed on top of the existing slab. Redundant portacabins were removed.

The existing roof to this single storey building was raised in areas to accommodate minimum internal floor to ceiling heights. This involved structural and roofing work. The existing defective flat roof was repaired. Repairs were made to the roof cladding, colour matched to the original material.

The job entailed the provision of new external windows and doors and a new external footpath.

Works included a complete rewire of the entire facility including a new incoming NIE electricity supply cable. In order to maintain continuous power to security, phone systems and the fridges which kept drugs at a constant temperature, we provided a temporary generator during this operation.

New foul drainage and manholes were connected to the existing system. We were able to rationalize the drainage layout to reduce the number of new internal manholes and hence the extent of internal excavation required.

A new water tank was installed in the roofspace entailing the provision of new structural steel support and weekend working. New secondary return pipework was provided for legionella protection.

Key Features:

  • We liaised with 5 separate GP practice managers during the course of the refurbishment
  • This job entailed a lot of evening and weekend working: all corridor and waiting area refurbishment was carried out outside normal centre opening hours
  • Noisy work stopped at agreed times to accommodate ongoing clinics
  • We decanted all equipment out of rooms to decant accommodation and then back in again once each phase was completed
  • We kept to our own designated parking area remote from the centre. Deliveries were scheduled for 8am before the GP surgeries opened
