Another Restoration project for Woodvale Construction.
Woodvale’s Restoration division has been awarded the contract to restore the Grade B Listed Aras Colmcille former primary school located at Long Tower, Derry.
The complex project is located on a restricted sloping site and is the third project of the Built Heritage Programme that Woodvale has been involved in.
The existing building has deteriorated to such an extent that it is unsafe to enter it before major façade retention completion. Woodvale have secured the services of Armstrong Taylor Structural Engineers, who have a vast experience of work on similar projects, to design the temporary steel façade retention system.
This will then allow work to commence on asbestos removal, removing the roof and underpinning the entire building. A temporary roof will be used to ensure that the existing building fabric doesn’t suffer from any further deterioration during restoration.
Paul Mc Gread Woodvale’s Project Manager commented “Like any restoration project we have had involvement in I believe many unforeseen challenges will appear during the construction phase. We believe that in our team we have the experience to deliver another successful project that will surpass the expectations of our client. Whilst the footprint of the existing building is relatively small, the sloping site and restricted access all add to the complexities of the project. We will be using a tower crane to get materials onto site and minimise disruption to visitors to the Long Tower Church. We look forward to getting this project completed during the City of Culture celebrations.”
