175 year old time capsule found at Brooke Park

Woodvale operatives have uncovered a message from the past when excavating in Brooke Park in the location of the old Gwyn Institute Building.

175 year old lead cylinder dating from 1840 was set into the foundation stone for the building, which was originally erected as an orphanage for boys following an endowment by John Gwyn, a wealthy linen merchant.

The contents of the cylinder are unknown but Derry City and Strabane District Council has plans to open it in the coming weeks. In the meantime we are cracking on with the regeneration of the Park including the horticulture and contact sports centres, a new synthetic pitch, a new café pavilion, refurbishment of the listed gatehouse and substantial landscaping works.
